The Association of the friends of Bertsolaritza Territories Gipuzkoa History

History

Although Gipuzkoan bertsolaritza is one of the most robust, the Association of Friends of Bertsolaritza was not created until 17 May 1993. The National Association, aimed at the whole of the Basque Country had been founded in 1987, basing itself on the dynamism of Gipuzkoa and making its headquarters there. As a result, the Association of Friends of Bertsolaritza had difficulties in making its own mark.

The principal lines of work of the Gipuzkoan association have been:

  • The provincial championships of 1991, 1995, 2001 and 2003 to select candidates for the National Championships.
  • The bertsolaris inter-town championships of 1999. More than 100 bertsolaris participated, overcoming the tension and nervousness associated with competitiveness.
