The Association of the friends of Bertsolaritza Territories Iparralde History

History

The Iparralde Association of Friends of Bertsolaritza was formed in 1982 in order to unite and foment bertsolaritza in Lapurdi, Baxenafarroa (Lower Navarre) and Zuberoa.

Over these years, efforts have been made to carve out a place for bertsolaritza with Iparralde, especially since the 1998-99 academic year. Followers of the art have grown in numbers and new bertsolari schools have been set up. Today there are nine such schools in Iparralde: 5 in Lapurdi, 2 in Lower Navarre and 2 in Zuberoa.

From 1998 on, the number of performances of bertsolaris greatly increased: 33 in 1998, 75 in 1999, 90 in 2000 and 92 in 2004.
