Xabier Amuriza

Born in Amorebieta (Biscay) the 3rd May 1941. He took the holy orders in 1965, and since 1968, under Franco's dictatorship, he spent seven years jailed in three periods. He left the priesthood in 1976. We could also emphasize his political militancy next to his faculties of writer, journalist, teacher and bertsolari. He has been twice national champion, in 1980 and 1982. He has published several discs and books, many of them about bertsolaritza. Many lyrics of Basque well-known singers have his signature. His performing arts in the 1980 national championship marked the beginning of a new age. His oral expression and linguistic wealth, in addition to a new structuring of bertsos were great innovations. In the same way, he made important contributions in metric and tunes: new strophes, new tonalities. Amuriza introduced bertsolaritza in a new age, in which he was the first promoter and teacher of the schools of bertsolaris (bertso-eskola). In the decade of 90's he reduced his trajectory to go deeper into new formats (he promoted performances with no imposed topic). Nowadays he participates in this type of formats.
